REVERE, MASS. — Allison Cahill tossed 5 touchdown passes and Chanté Bonds rushed for two scores as the Boston Renegades trounced the D.C. Divas 56-6. Boston’s Adrienne Smith reeled in two scoring receptions, while the Renegades defense held the Divas to 50 total yards.
Boston’s offense was kickstarted by a 41-yard scramble by Cahill that set up Bonds’ first ground score at 11:33 in the first quarter.
D.C.’s first possession was cut short when Divas running back D’Ajah Scott lost control of a handoff and the ensuing fumble was recovered by Boston’s Allie Genereux. An 11-yard catch by Renegades Tight End Kathryn Tylander and a favorable 15 yard penalty helped put Bonds in position to make an 8-yard dash to her second touchdown of the day.
Boston’s defense again made a big play when Defensive End Danielle Fournier sacked D.C. quarterback Amanda Congialdi for a 7-yard loss on a 3rd-and-1. Fournier would finish with a multiple tackles, a fumble recovery, and a blocked kick.
On the next drive, Renegades Wide Receiver Stephanie Pascual would make two receptions for 30 yards before Cahill would take advantage of a blown coverage to throw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Emily Beinecke. Beinecke would add a 23-yard reception later to lead Boston receivers with 67 total yards. Vanessa Aukshunas‘ extra point kick put Boston ahead 21-0. She finished the game with a perfect 6 for 6 on PATs.
Again, the Divas struggled to move the chains, punting after Fournier and Linebacker Shannon Singletary combined for another third-down sack at the end of the period. But D.C. caught a break when they recovered the punt in Boston’s territory after it bounced off the ankle of a Renegade. Congialdi scrambled for 12 yards on the next play, but would leave the game with an injury.
Now with rookie Danielle Flores under center, D.C. running back D’Ajah Scott burst for a 24-yard touchdown run to make the score 21-6. Despite the scoring play, the Divas were unable to get much momentum against the swarming Renegades defense. Boston stopped the ensuing two-point conversion attempt, and D.C. wouldn’t score again.
Silvie Aibeche took over the quarterback role for the Divas just before halftime for the rest of the game. The European Aibeche has played tackle football in Finland and France, and last played for the Seattle Majestics in 2019. She was sacked twice finished 0/2 with an interception.
Boston would score three more times in the quarter, on passes of 18 and 27 yards to Smith, and 15 yards to Pascual, making the score 42-6 at halftime.
In the third period, Tylander pulled in a 6-yard touchdown reception. Mariette Martinez‘s extra point kick extended Boston’s lead to 49-6.
On the next drive, D’Ajah Scott sustained severe injuries to her leg and hip. She is currently hospitalized and faces a long road to recovery. Those wishing to help can donate to a crowd raising fund established to aid in Scott’s recovery.
“You never want to see a player go down like that, and that is especially true for a player of her caliber, ” says Boston Head Coach John Johnson. “She is a multi-dimensional player and an ultimate competitor. We are praying for a full and speedy recovery.”
The remainder of the game was played with a running clock, and many players saw field time. The quarterback position for Boston was played for the rest of the game by rookie Megan McFadden who finished with 3 completions for 57 yards, two interceptions, and a touchdown, to Martinez. For the second game in a row, the rookie Martinez followed up her own receiving touchdown by kicking a PAT. The final score was 56-6.
For the second time in as many matchups, the Renegades handed the D.C. the largest margin of defeat in their history (50). With a 46-point margin of victory on June 29, 2019 — the last time D.C. and Boston squared off — Boston broke the long-held record for margin of victory against the Divas set by the Philadelphia Liberty Belles on April 28, 2001. The Philadelphia Liberty Belles posted a 40-0 shutout in the Divas’ very first game.
The Renegades next face the Baltimore Nighthawks on Saturday, May 22 in Revere. This matchup will be Boston’s last home game of the regular season, after which they will travel to D.C. and Detroit before the playoffs begin.
