DETROIT — Allison Cahill launched three touchdown strikes and Ruth Matta scored twice on the ground and once through the air to lead the Boston Renegades to victory over the Detroit Dark Angels 41-3 in the final game of the regular season. The Renegades defense collected four sacks and nine tackles-for-loss, and allowed no pass completions. Linebacker Allie Genereux had a monster game amassing 21 combined tackles, a career high.
This was the first trip to Detroit for any Boston Women’s Football team. The Dark Angels welcomed their guests with an onside kick which Detroit recovered, but they were forced to punt six plays later.
On Boston’s first possession, running back #21 Chanté Bonds gashed Detroit’s defense with runs of 11, 14, an 15 yards. The 73-yard, ten-play drive culminated in Bonds’ tenth touchdown of the season. #11 Sarah Tully returned to action for the first time this season to kick the extra point. In 2019, Tully topped the league in extra point kicks made (46).
After the Dark Angels turned over the ball on downs, Boston again turned to its running backs. Bonds ripped a 27-yard run, and an 11-yard dash. #22 Ruth Matta then caught a short screen pass and turned it upfield for a 27-yard touchdown. Matta also scored twice in the third quarter on rushes of 22 and 42 yards.
Quarterback #7 Allison Cahill also threw touchdown passes to #87 Emily Beinecke and #11 Sarah Tully. #8 Lauren Yung turned in her most prolific performance of the season, leading all wide receivers with 43 yards. The final score was 41-3 in favor of the Renegades. The Renegades previously defeated the Dark Angels 62-0 in the season opener at home.
Regular Season Accomplishments
With regular season play in the books, the Renegades can briefly enjoy some of their teammates’ accomplishments before turning their eyes to the playoffs.
- Allison Cahill surpassed the 300 career touchdown mark. She also captured the regular season passing title with 948 yards. She also lead the league in completion percentage (73.9%), touchdown passes (19), and quarterback rating (141.67).
- Rookie #40 Vanessa Aukshunas finished with a perfect kicking percentage on PATs. She is only the ninth player in the history of the WFA to accomplish this feat. She also finished the regular season with the most extra-point kicks in the league (24). She is the first player in WFA history to accomplish both feats in the same season.
- Allie Genereux finished the regular season as the league’s top tackler with 61 combined tackles.
- #5 Tee Creech lead the league in punt return touchdowns (2) and punt return average (32).
The Playoff Picture
Boston sits atop the league’s national rankings after finishing the regular season 5-0. The WFA playoffs begin on Saturday, June 26 but the Renegades will enjoy a bye week. On Saturday, July 10 Boston will host the WFA National Conference Championship Game at Harry della Russo Stadium in Revere, Mass. They will face the winner of the playoff game between the D.C. Divas (1-3) and Tampa Bay Inferno (6-0).
The Minnesota Vixen (6-0), Cali War (5-1), Arlington Impact (4-2) and Dallas Elite (3-3) are the contenders for the American Conference title.
Back-to-back champions in 2018 and 2019, the Renegades seek to be the first team to win three consecutive titles in Women’s Football Alliance.
